The THINKCity electric car has taken centre stage at the world’s first dedicated electric mobility concept store in Zurich. The m-way store has been created and designed by Swiss retailing giant Migros and THINK’s distribution partner in Switzerland and is focussed on giving information to motorists about electric vehicles.
The project uses a 24-kilowatt-hour fixed storage EnerDel battery pack, originally designed for the THINKCity electric vehicle. Three Mazda Demios (sold outside of Japan as the Mazda2), have been converted to a battery electric drive powered by EnerDel Li-ion battery packs.
Then there are a slew of fully electric small vehicles that are pinning their hopes on eco-conscious city dwellers who may not want to spend much more than $25,000 on a new technology. EnerDel is scheduled to ship its first cells and packs for the ThinkCity EV on 1 March 2010. The lithium-ion version of the THINK vehicle will have 384 cells in its 25 kWh battery pack and a range of more than 100 miles. The coating equipment is one of the plant’s major capital items.
Also, besides giving you the ability to charge at night when most utility rates are lower, future vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology may allow you to sell some of your stored energy back to the utilities. Currently, there are some industrial facilities that use battery swapping to replenish the energy stores of electric forklifts.
