North Carolina is getting a $1.4B sodium-ion battery gigafactory

Baua Electric

Photo: Natron Energy Natron Energy has announced it will build the first sodium-ion battery gigafactory in the US, in North Carolina. Natron’s batteries are currently the only UL-listed sodium-ion batteries on the market. Sodium-ion batteries need more development before they can compete head-to-head with lithium-ion in the EV market.

Sodium-ion batteries are set to spark a renewable energy revolution – and Australia must be ready – ET Auto

Baua Electric

Solar and wind are clearly now the cheapest form of electricity. But limits to these technologies can undermine the case for a renewables-only electricity mix. The challenges posed by solar and wind generators are real. But a new way to firm up the world’s electricity grids is fast developing: sodium-ion batteries.

Stanford team develops sodium-ion battery with performance equivalent to Li-ion, but at much lower cost

Green Car Congress

Stanford researchers have developed a sodium-ion battery (SIB) that can store the same amount of energy as a state-of-the-art lithium ion, at substantially lower cost. Thus, further research is required to find better sodium host materials. The sodium salt makes up the cathode; the anode is made up of phosphorous.

New liquid alloy electrode significantly lowers operating temperature of sodium-beta batteries; improved performance

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have devised an alloying strategy that enables sodium-beta batteries to operate at significantly lower temperatures. The new electrode enables sodium-beta batteries to last longer, helps streamline their manufacturing process and reduces the risk of accidental fire.

Energy Harvesting for Wearable Technology Steps Up

Cars That Think

And today, technology is maturing to the point that meaningful amounts of these energy giveaways can be harvested to liberate wearables from ever needing a battery. The best-known wearable energy-harvesting tech today is, of course, solar, which pulls down electrons from sunlight or ambient light. But solar is just the opening gambit.

Xcel Terms First Phase of Sodium-Sulfur Battery Wind Energy Storage Test Project Successful

Green Car Congress

Xcel Energy has released the preliminary results from its wind-to-battery (W2B) storage project in Minnesota, and termed the technology successful. In October 2008, Xcel began testing a one-megawatt sodium-sulfur (NaS) battery ( earlier post ) to demonstrate its ability to store wind energy and move it to the electricity grid when needed.
