Azure Dynamics Corporation and Ford Motor Company announced that New York Power Authority (NYPA), the nation’s largest state public power organization, has been added to the LEAD customer program for the Ford Transit Connect Electric van. The battery is rechargeable using either a 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlet.

More than 300,000 Transit Connect vehicles have been sold since 2009 when Ford created the segment in the United States. Of those, 97% are still on the road.

The Dutch energy company Eneco has signed contracts for the purchase of 50 Smith Ampere electric commercial vans, the electric version of the Ford Transit Connect, to be delivered in 2009 and 2010. The agreement is worth €2.3 million (US$3.4 The contract for the 50 Smith Amperes comes on top of this.

Taxi Medallion Management in Chicago has purchased 12 Ford Transit Connect Taxis running on compressed natural gas (CNG) for its fleet. The purchase is part of the company’s goal of reducing emissions by 25%, said Michael Levine, CEO of Taxi Medallion Management. The taxis have a 39-foot turning radius.

In the next year, Ford will offer eight commercial vehicles with a gaseous-prep option: Transit Connect van and wagon. Transit van, wagon, cutaway and chassis cab. AT&T recently purchased 650 F-350 chassis cabs with the CNG-prep option. CNG sells for an average of $2.11 per gallon. F53 and F59 stripped chassis.
