Toyota’s Prius was the top-seller in Japan in July, with 27,712 units sold—almost quadruple the 7,058 units sold in July 2008, according to data from the Japan Automotive Dealers Association. This marks the third month in a row that Prius was the top-selling car in Japan. Almost 10% of these were placed through the scrappage scheme.

The scrappage scheme has put the car industry on track to meet the EU target of 130g/km of CO2 by 2012. The Toyota Optimal Drive System has also reduced emissions across the range and the Prius hybrid has made a noticeable difference to the average CO2 figure. km and Audi, which has cut its emissions by 9.6 per cent to 158.2g/km.

The success story that is the new Toyota Prius continued into July as it once again topped the sales charts in Japan. This is the third successive month that the Prius has been the top-selling car in Japan (see previous article ).

The new Toyota Prius is officially on sale in the UK now - and it has already been deemed a hit. The hybrid car, dubbed the car of the stars because of its popularity among Hollywood celebrities, has attracted a huge order book with almost 10 per cent of its orders made through the UK’s scrappage scheme.
