The US Department of Energy (DOE) is awarding more than $145 million to 69 projects in 24 states to help shape the next generation of solar energy technologies. The SunShot Initiative seeks to make solar energy systems more cost-competitive, without long-term subsidies, by reducing the cost of these systems about 75% by the end of the decade.

China’s just committed to a 50% solar subsidy in the last 30 days, Westly told us. And in the US, not only is the Obama administration providing a major stimulus program, but 31 states are enacting incentives and mandates to require clean alternative energy for utilities.

The treasure chest was cleverly disguised in the form of Federal stimulus money from the ARRA, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. While it’s sad but true that the entire gang in Sacramento can no longer figure out how to make California work, President Obama and his “Yes I Can&# team do know what they’re doing.

By 2012, we should have made some progress on this, just in time to re-elect Obama to his second term. The economic stimulus package currently before Congress could include incentives for both buyers of electric vehicles and electric vehicle battery manufacturers.
