The US Department of State recommended today to President Obama that the presidential permit for the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline be denied and, that at this time, the TransCanada Keystone XL Pipeline be determined not to serve the national interest. The proposed pipeline was to carry oil sands crude from Canada to the US Gulf Coast.

In a June speech at Georgetown University, President Barack Obama said that the controversial Keystone XL pipeline would only be built if the project “ does not significantly exacerbate the problem of carbon pollution.” ( Earlier post.). The Obama Administration will delay a decision on approving the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada until sometime in 2013—i.e., The concern about the proposed route’s impact on the Sand Hills of Nebraska has increased significantly over time, and has resulted in the Nebraska legislature convening a special session to consider the issue.
