Audi opens power-to-gas facility in Werlte/Emsland; e-gas from water, green electricity and CO2

Green Car Congress

Water and oxygen are the only by-products. The waste heat given off during methanation is used as process energy in the adjacent biogas plant, significantly increasing overall efficiency. At this facility, microorganisms use water (brackish, salt or wastewater) sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce high-purity fuels.

USDA provides $91M loan guarantee to Cool Planet for biogasoline blendstock plant; biomass pyrolysis and catalytic conversion

Green Car Congress

A precise amount of ground biomass is fed into a moving tray; at the first heating and processing stage, the function is to drive off entrapped water, and to perform the first step of de-hydration of the biomass while mechanically compacting it for more effective heat transfer at later stages of processing. Audi testing find e-ethanol and e-diesel produced by Joule often perform better than conventional counterparts

Green Car Congress

Joule’s Helioculture platform uses engineered microorganisms directly and continuously to convert sunlight and waste CO 2 into infrastructure-ready fuels, including ethanol and hydrocarbons (n-alkanes) that serve as the essential chemical building blocks for diesel.

Joule secures first of multiple sites for solar fuel production; expects costs as low as $20/bbl for renewable diesel (including subsidies) at full-scale production

Green Car Congress

Joule says Lea County ideally meets it requirements for production, including high solar insolation, access to non-potable water and waste CO 2. The process is closed and uses industrial waste CO 2 at concentrations 50–100 times higher than atmospheric. Joule Unlimited, Inc.,

USDA to award $11M loan guarantee to Oregon biorefinery

Green Car Congress

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) will support Novus Energy’s new biorefinery project in Boardman, Ore. The Novus plant will process agricultural waste into fuel, natural gas, organic fertilizer and other bio-based products. The plant will return approximately 172,000 gallons of treated water to the Port of Morrow daily.

NRC report concludes hydraulic fracturing poses low risk for causing earthquakes, but risks are higher for wastewater injection wells; CCS impact undetermined

Green Car Congress

Schematic diagram of a shale gas well following hydraulic fracture treatment, with the relative depths of local water wells shown for scale. Hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) extracts natural gas by injecting a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals in short bursts at high pressure into deep underground wells.
