ZF has developed an electric motor which does not require magnets. In contrast to the magnet-free concepts of separately excited synchronous motors (SESM) already available today, ZF’s I 2 SM (In-Rotor Inductive-Excited Synchronous Motor) transmits the energy for the magnetic field via an inductive exciter inside the rotor shaft.

China-based Dongfeng Motor (DFM) has launched two new passenger cars powered by ProteanDrive Pd18 in-wheel motors. Unveiled at the event was the E70, the world’s first fully homologated passenger car equipped with ProteanDrive, alongside the Voyah Zhuiguang, a luxury sedan built on a new vehicle platform using in-wheel-motors.

A team of MIT engineers is developing a 1MW motor that could be a key stepping stone toward electrifying larger aircraft. The motor under design is a 1-MW, air-cooled, outer-rotor, Halbach-array PMSM. The motor could then turn the electrical energy into mechanical work to power a plane’s propellers.

Hitachi Metals has verified in simulations that by optimizing the design of motors that use its high-performance ferrite magnet NMF 15 (hereinafter “ferrite magnet motors” earlier post ), they are able to achieve the same level of output as traction motors for xEV that use neodymium magnets.
