The six GEM passenger and utility models are legal on most streets with posted speeds of 35 mph or less. GEM cars are used by local, state and national government agencies, resorts, master-planned communities, universities, medical and corporate campuses, as well as by sports teams, taxi-shuttle services and individual consumers.

E-bikes can reach speeds of up to 28 mph and can go 20 -100 miles on a single charge. Another two-wheeled option for a different type of travel: zero-emission motorcycles. Just like traditional four-wheeled electric vehicles, electric motorcycles are quieter, smoother and more comfortable. Another plus: no tailpipe pollution.

I understand the logic behind such a law -- the California state senator who speared the effort is concerned about carnage on American roads, and a report produced by the state does show that fatal crashes involving teens, motorcycles, and impaired drivers all increased from 2020 to 2021.

I’m talking about Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) , the official term for what many people call Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs). In fact, the little EV is roughly the size of just two motorcycles parked side by side. They’re also not nearly as powerful, since they are federally limited to just 25 mph (40 km/h) top speeds.

At 30 mph (51 km/h), people will get a good long look at you as you cruise by. Aventura-X also has 50 mph (80 km/h) models, but the one I’m riding is built for looks, not for speed. Considering I was testing this in Florida, where 50 mph roads are just how you exit your neighborhood, that lower speed was a bit of an issue.

Eli plans to sell vehicles “through local distributors and dealer partners” and claims to have an assembly plant capable of producing 4,000 vehicles per year.
