On Tuesday, Waymo announced in a press release that its Waymo One self-driving taxi service is now open to anyone in LA, offering its ride-hailing services 24 hours a day. ” The company also announced that it will be the Official Ride-Hail Partner of the LA Auto Show running from November 22 to December 1.

Waymo is adding to its driverless taxi service areas in both Los Angeles and San Francisco, and is currently testing in Austin in advance of offering rides to the public soon. The cars currently only work in certain geofenced areas that have been well-mapped by Waymo, in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

In total, the area covers approximately 63 square miles – a larger area than Waymo’s 47mi² San Francisco service area, but much smaller than the 180mi² area that Waymo operates in in Phoenix. Waymo’s coverage area in Austin is 43 square miles, and it has already started testing autonomous, but for Waymo employees only.

While San Francisco was one of Waymo’s early testing sites, it is lagging behind the Phoenix metropolitan region in terms of autonomous ride-hailing commercialization. Because in 2017, Waymo began providing rides to Phoenix residents and though the company didn’t make considerable money, the program is said to be a success.
