The development team retained the existing conventional front-wheel-drive system of the Combo but added an electric drive, powered via low-cost valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries, to the rear wheels. The operational strategy takes the state of charge in the pack down to 40%.

In May, the US Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a $150,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant to Axion Power to fund a commercialization plan for the use of its PbC batteries in a low-cost, high-efficiency dual battery architecture for micro-hybrid (i.e., Micro-hybrid testing against VRLA. Earlier post.).
