The new truck, known internally as “Beta,” expands on the capabilities of Toyota’s first Project Portal test vehicle by increasing the estimated range to more than 300 miles per fill. More than 16,000 pollution-emitting trucks are working in Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, a number that is estimated to balloon to 32,000 by 2030.

What we’re not breathing is clean air, because the smoke from the La Canada-Flintridge fire, about 38 miles from here, is still making air quality hazardous and people in the L.A.

New vehicles to be deployed include 55 CNG vehicles, 363 propane vehicles, 89 hybrid electric vehicles, and 56 neighborhood electric vehicles. The project will replace 180 diesel drayage trucks at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with LNG trucks. Total DOE award: $12,975,388.

The far higher volumes of carbon dioxide per mile from heavy trucks make them an obvious target for zero-emission powertrains. Some makers suggest hydrogen fuel cells will be the way to go; the most promising application seems to be long-haul trucking with few or no stops. But today, heavy trucks remain a diesel world.

And there’s 40% of the Class 8 market and the medium-duty market that [drives] under 250 miles a day. You can get 250 miles a day even with a full load nowadays, so that technology is there for right now. In most cases they’re running from the port, 50 or 100 miles to a warehouse and then running back to the port, back and forth.
