The BMW Group will begin sourcing aluminum produced using solar electricity with immediate effect. The use of solar electricity is therefore an effective lever for reducing the CO 2 emissions associated with aluminum smelting. The use of solar electricity for producing aluminum is a major step in this direction.

For the BMW Group, this is another step towards its goal of creating the most sustainable supply chain in the automotive industry. Up until now, wheels have accounted for about 5% of supply chain CO 2 emissions. The BMW Group procures about 10 million light-alloy wheels per year; 95% of these are made from cast aluminum.
