Sandia National Laboratories’ Battery Abuse Testing Laboratory is undergoing a major renovation so Sandia researchers can test larger batteries for electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Those studies included 12 years of testing for the FreedomCAR program and the US Advanced Battery Consortium.

Automakers unveiled more than a dozen production-ready, plug-in electric and hybrid electric vehicles at the Detroit auto show earlier this month, many of which will be on dealership lots between 2010 and 2012.
