The Escape PHEV uses regenerative braking, which converts kinetic energy into electric energy and stores it in the battery when applying the brakes or coasting. For increased recharging, there is an “L” button on the gear selector wheel. With a plug-in option the Escape can drive all-electric (for more than 40 miles we found).
