Darwin mentions slavery only briefly in his Santiago journals — he suspected a “very pretty schooner” in the harbor of being “a slaver in disguise” — but was repulsed by the cruelty he soon witnessed in South America. Their juice, called calabaceira, is thick, velvety and slightly sour — and was my favorite part of breakfast in Praia.)
