When the batteries reach a predetermined state of discharge, the Capstone C30 microturbine fires up and recharges the batteries on the fly to extend the driving range up to 500 miles. A key thing, he said, will be to recharge the batteries at an acceptable time for the electricity grid — to “make sure people aren’t charging at the very peak, peak time,” like late afternoon when the electricity grid is already weighted down by demands like air conditioning. Oil is the alternative. but not all of it.

Better Place is building stations in San Francisco, Hawaii, Israel, and Denmark to swap out 1,000 pound batteries in a car wash type set up. There are choices for 110 volt versus 220 volt, slow versus quick charges, and solar options. The electricity for recharging has to come from somewhere, which means power plants.

The rest of Hawaii’s electricity is generated by burning oil. Yes, tankers of dirty, expensive oil are brought in and boatloads of money are shipped back to the oil companies. Oil burning is one of the single biggest sources of pollution coming from the whole state. Another 5% comes from wind and 5% from hydro.
