Based on 12,330 miles driven per year, the pure battery electric Nissan Leaf has lower five-year and 10-year life cycle costs than the internal combustion Hyundai Elantra and the plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt, even without the federal government incentive. The average Californian drives 14,435 miles every year.

Feedback from participants in Chevrolet’s electric vehicle demonstration fleets ( earlier post ) in Shanghai (Sail EV), Korea (Cruze EV) and India (Beat EV) are being incorporated into the Spark EV. A123 Systems will supply the advanced nanophosphate lithium-ion battery packs that will power the Spark EV.

A chemist and government researcher, Wang raised some $300,000 from relatives, rented about 2,000 square meters of space, and set out to manufacture rechargeable batteries to compete with imports from Sony and Sanyo. Today BYD employs 130,000 people in 11 factories, eight in China and one each in India, Hungary, and Romania.

The G-Wiz, made in India, now offers a lithium-ion battery option that extendsits driving range from 48 to 75 miles – but doubles the price. It ispleasingly quick but will still only manage 150 miles between charges, muchless than a tank of petrol, even if it costs only £1.50 to charge overnight.

Many of the first Prius hybrids that were released are still running strong on their NiMH batteries after 100,000+ miles.
