Today BYD employs 130,000 people in 11 factories, eight in China and one each in India, Hungary, and Romania. Both will be sold first in China, primarily to fleet users: the government, post office, utilities, and taxi companies, all of which will build central fast-charging facilities.

The LEVC electric taxi might still be the only EV that both designed *and* produced on UK’s home turf. Sales leadership was fairly narrowly decided between the Tesla Model 3 and Renault Zoe, with previous near-perennial local favorite Nissan Leaf pushed to 3rd. Also, Portugal is where Jose calls home. Globally ~14k Ioniq BEVs were sold.

That track record—and that potential—is what persuaded Warren Buffett’s company, Berkshire Hathaway, to buy 10% of BYD last fall for $230 million.
