With low-cost EVs hitting key global markets, BYD is quickly catching up to Ford. It opened its first in Thailand last month, with Hungary, Brazil, Turkey, Mexico, and Pakistan plants in the works. Ford’s CEO Jim Farley has praised BYD’s low-cost EVs , calling the Seagull “pretty damn good.”

Like most Chinese automakers, BYD reports NEV sales, including battery electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles. Of the 296,446 passenger vehicles sold last month, 125,377 were EVs, while the other 171,069 were plug-in hybrids, up 19% and 79% from last year, respectively.

However, BYD’s figures include plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models and EVs. The company opened its first manufacturing plant in Thailand this summer, with several more planned in Hungary, Turkey, Brazil, and Mexico. BYD also owns most of its supply chain, driving down costs further. Both were new quarterly records.
