Rice University team links PM2.5 and ozone levels with cardiac arrest

Green Car Congress

A team from Rice University and the Houston Fire Department EMS has found a direct correlation between out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) and levels of air pollution and ozone. The research, based on a massive data set unique to Houston, was published this month in the American Heart Association journal Circulation.

Texas study finds PHEV use could increase ozone at night, decrease ozone during the day

Green Car Congress

A study by researchers at the University of Texas found that in general, use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) can lead to an increase in ozone during nighttime hours (due to decreased scavenging from both vehicles and EGU stacks) and a decrease in ozone during daytime hours.

Study finds paved surfaces in Houston worsen air quality

Green Car Congress

Paved surfaces in the Houston area keep the city warmer than more natural surfaces. ““The very existence of the Houston area favors stagnation.” The research team combined extensive atmospheric measurements with computer simulations to examine the impact of pavement on breezes in Houston. Study: curbing diesel emissions could reduce mortality rates in big cities

Green Car Congress

Freight transportation is a pillar of the US national economy, but while long-haul trucks account for less than 6% of the vehicle miles traveled over US highways, they account for about 40% of the emissions of air polluting particulate matter and about 55% of nitrogen oxides, the precursor to ozone in the atmosphere, the study said.

These sites will supplemented by additional instrumentation provided by NASA, EPA, Howard University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, and Millersville University in Pennsylvania. Both aircraft will measure ozone and a mixture of soot and PM.

In addition to ozone and particulate matter, the other pollutants are lead, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Houston: (The Woodlands-Sugar Land), TX: 229 lives saved, 661 fewer morbidities and 636, 211 fewer impacted days. Fresno, CA: 260 lives saved, 672 fewer morbidities and 390,551 fewer impacted days.
