Seen here near the port of Seattle, in 1962, the NS Savannah was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. A large container ship needs about 3,000 megawatt-hours a day, which is roughly the capacity of the biggest grid battery ever built. Hundreds of nuclear reactors have since been used on ships and submarines.
