Plug-in vehicle sales are indeed increasing, with the LEAF and Volt each selling about 2500 units in June 2013. And thanks to the efforts of Plug In America, you can still claim a tax credit for your investment in home charging. It’s also grid-friendly. Level 2 is perfect for the home. In public, Level 2 is often a compromise.

We plugged it in five times, and despite an overall route that skewed more to long-distance highway travel than around-town errands, we managed to do 138 miles on grid electricity alone. Plug-in hybrids that never connect to the grid might as well not have a plug at all. Default: hybrid, not EV. Did they plug in daily?

GM has been saying for a while now that they had picked their supplier for the LiIon battery in the Volt, but they weren’t prepared to announce who it was. GM Reported Ready To Give Volt Battery Nod to Unit of LG Chem. Lots going on with batteries now, as John O’Dell’s piece below illustrates. that got the nod.

German energy firm RWE has stated that a cadre of respected automakers and energy firms have all come together in agreement on a three-point, 400-volt plug that will enable electric cars the world over to be recharged anywhere, regardless of which recharging station they stop at.

Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology is a bi-directional electric grid interface that allows a plug-in to take energy from the grid or put it back on the grid. Smart Grid City will use a realtime high-speed two-way communication throughout the distribution grid. Smart meters and substations will be integral.

For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. Extended-range electric vehicles — such as the Chevy Volt, which GM says will recharge in three hours — offer another route, adding a small gas engine to keep drivers from feeling stranded without access to fuel.

Also, besides giving you the ability to charge at night when most utility rates are lower, future vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology may allow you to sell some of your stored energy back to the utilities. The demands on the grid would require a lot of infrastructure work without some sort of "energy reservoir" in place.
