Until recently, the residents of Melamchi, Nepal, cooked meals and heated water for bathing over a wood-burning stove. The project in Nepal was supported by funds Kiani raised through the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. Kiani traveled in 2018 to Cairns, Australia, for the IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics.

He was a member of several committees at conferences including the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting , the International Conference on Solid State Devices and Materials , and the International Technical Conference on Circuits/ Systems, Computers, and Communications. He was the 2014–2015 chair of the IEEE Seoul Section.
