Once again, a conference on plug-in cars. Plug-in 2008 in San Jose, California witnessed a noon-time address by new heavy-weight convert, Andy Grove, former CEO of Intel. One week earlier, former Vice President Al Gore issued his well-received challenge to make the American grid 100% renewable in ten years.

As I spent more time with the brand’s first electric car, the Solterra, it started to make sense that there’s no reason to think its EVs will shed the Gore-Tex look. While the Solterra’s design is relatively boxy, it didn’t seem to be wind noise up around the roof or pillars so much as a din of road noise from below and behind.

Now look, I love camping as much as the next man – as long as the next man is allergic to canvas, Gore-Tex and wood smoke and has a claustrophobes fear of sleeping bags, and tents – but I do wish it came with a few more mod-cons. Pretty much any time someone said “I wish I could plug in my…”. And… nothing happened.

The Toronto Mayor jumped from an all electric Mitsubishi to a plug in hybrid Fitzker positively on fire for them both. And we had a screening of “Who Killed the Electric Car&# at a film festival where Al Gore greeted us and had a few things to say about the culture wars. Toronto would lead!

Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology is a bi-directional electric grid interface that allows a plug-in to take energy from the grid or put it back on the grid.

Pickens’ plan includes lots of wind-generated electricity, ostensibly to replace the natural gas he would divert to vehicles. One can’t, however, simply replace gas generation with wind.
