In 2000, at a trade fair in Germany, an obscure Singapore company called Trek 2000 unveiled a solid-state memory chip encased in plastic and attached to a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector. Even in his home of Singapore, few people know of Tan or Trek. This was granted to Amir Ban, Dov Moran, and Oron Ogdan in November 2000.

Being stationary with respect to Earth means that GEO satellites are always within range of a downlink station, so they can send data back to Earth in minutes. Typically, they can transmit data for only 10 minutes or so before they get out of range of a ground station. Both offer free access to a wide range of open data.
