The NYPD already uses electric scooters and electric powered golf carts on boardwalks, in parks and some transit hubs. The FDNY and NYPD initially will use the vehicles for non-emergency duties, including use by NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents. The Chevrolet Volt is the first electric car being used by the NYPD.

While people can purchase neighborhood electric vehicles today for about $10K, they only have a top speed of 35 miles an hour or so, essentially glorified golf-carts. Fortunately, Bob Bath down in Grants Pass has already compiled a huge amount of information on converting a 5th generation Civic at his CivicWithACord site.

Why grant them the privledge to spend our money in the first place? You guys go ahead and buy your 40 mile per charge GM golf cart. This is what they do and always have done. Put the money back into the peoples hands and watch our dreams finally become reality. Oh, and it looks wayyyyy cooler than the Volt.
