Colorado residents who purchase or lease a new Chevrolet Volt are eligible for a state tax credit of up to $6,000 in addition to a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 for a total price reduction of as much as $13,500. A tool to determine specific state or local electric vehicle tax credits is available here.

Proponents of the surtax argue the fee is needed to offset losses in state gas tax revenues since EV owners don’t need to buy gas. GM believes this proposal is misguided and will hurt sales and market adoption of EVs. The small number of pure EVs on the road at this point have a negligible impact on state revenues, GM argues.

The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI. The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV once again qualifies for the federal EV tax credit, but now it's also getting a small price increase. General Motors lost eligibility for the $7,500 credit when it reached the 200,000-unit sales cap that was previously in place.

General Motors (GM) expects the Chevrolet Silverado EV to get the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) full $7,500 tax credit. Chevrolet, a GM brand, unveiled the Silverado EV earlier this year. The Chevrolet Silverado EV will be equipped with GM’s Ultimum Platform and probably the Ultium battery pack.

The suggested retail price for the Volt will start at $39,995 (or $32,495 assuming a full federal tax credit of $7,500, which is subject to the customer’s eligibility). The price includes an $850 destination freight charge but excludes tax, title and license fees.
