New study finds gasoline stations vent up to 10x more benzene fumes than previously thought

Green Car Congress

A study led by environmental health scientists at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health examined the release of vapors from gasoline station vent pipes, and found benzene emissions were 10 times higher than estimates used in setback regulations that determine how close schools, playgrounds, and parks can be to the facilities.

U Wisc. study explores effects of biodiesel-gasoline blend in diesel engine

Green Car Congress

One high-efficiency combustion concept under investigation is gasoline compression ignition (GCI)—the use of gasoline-like fuels to deliver very low NO x and PM emissions as well as high efficiency in a diesel compression ignition engine. The commercially available gasoline base had an octane number of 87. Earlier post.)

Study finds that environmental impact of corn-ethanol E85 is 23% to 33% higher than that of gasoline; environmental problem-shifting

Green Car Congress

Environmental impacts of gasoline and E85. previous studies have followed the general framework of life cycle assessment (LCA), they have focused almost exclusively on quantifying the energy balance and GHG emissions associated with biofuels production. Error bar shows regional variations for E85. GW = global warming; Eut.

U-M researchers challenge USPS EV environmental study

Green Car Congress

A new University of Michigan study finds that making the switch to all-electric mail-delivery vehicles would lead to far greater reductions in greenhouse gas emissions than previously estimated by the US Postal Service (USPS). The Postal Service has not commented on the U-M study. Earlier post.).

Study finds lead from leaded gasoline persists in London air despite ‘90s ban

Green Car Congress

Lead levels in London’s atmosphere have dropped significantly since lead additives in gasoline were phased out, and currently meet UK air quality targets. The study, led by researchers from Imperial College London, found that up to 40% of lead in airborne particles today comes from the legacy of leaded gasoline.

Sandia team develops gasoline-like fuel blend with high renewable content that simultaneously increases ?-sensitivity, RON, and octane sensitivity

Green Car Congress

A team at Sandia National Laboratories has designed a five-component gasoline-like blend containing 40% vol of a mixture of 2-methyl furan and 2,5-dimethyl furan (representative of products of a viable pathway to make furans from bio-feedstock). Simulations show promising results when the resulting fuel is compared to regular E10 gasoline.
