Gasoline sales fell 8.4% (nearly 185 million less gallons) from the previous week for the seven-day period ending 28 November, bringing consumption to the lowest level for a Thanksgiving Week in 23 years, going back to 1997. Earlier this week, New Jersey officials announced plans to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035. The ban is New Jersey’s effort to improve the air quality in the state. The gas car ban is New Jersey’s first step toward zero-emissions vehicles. The rule will only apply to new car sales.

Jackson determined that, as a result of effects of Hurricane Sandy, extreme and unusual supply circumstances exist, which may result in a temporary shortage of gasoline compliant with federal regulations. The waiver was granted by EPA in coordination with the Department of Energy (DOE).
