For the last 18 months, a fleet of 6 methanol-fueled versions of the Geely Emgrand 7 cars have been in Iceland. Among drivers testing the vehicles were CRI staff and members of the Icelandic Automobile Association as well as several local service providers in the auto industry. Geely is a shareholder ($45.5-million Earlier post.).

While the country is one of the world’s largest producers of wind and solar renewable energy, it faces the issue of renewable energy being weather-dependent and prone to fluctuation. From well to wheel, Geely’s methanol vehicles allows for a 70% reduction in CO 2 emissions compared to gasoline models.

naturally aspirated methanol engine providing 97kW (130HP) of power and 175 N·m of max torque together with an electric motor providing 100kW (134HP) of power and 320 N·m for a combined 272kW (364HP) and 495 N·m of torque. From well to wheel, Geely’s methanol vehicles allow for a 70% reduction in CO 2 emissions compared to gasoline models.

Iceland is beautiful. I came as a guest for Driving Sustainability , Iceland’s conference for the future of cars. After the two day conference, we stayed on to film for “Revenge,&# because Iceland’s electricity is 100% renewable — the perfect place for EVs. The rumors are true.

It’s really hard to beat a week in Iceland. With the conference over, we went on a tour tracking down electric cars and the clean electricity to power them. With our Icelandic Camera Operator Bjorn Helgason. Shooting in a rain storm at the Blue Lagoon. That could definitely be in its future.
