New study confirms extensive gas leaks in the North Sea; recommends stricter guidelines for handling of abandoned wells

Researchers from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel have found that considerable quantities of the greenhouse gas methane escape uncontrolled into the water from abandoned oil and gas wells in the North Sea. On the basis of investigations directly on the seafloor it was possible to determine the amount of escaping gas.

Iran, Iraq, Syria sign $10B gas pipeline deal

Iran, Iraq, and Syria have signed a deal for the construction of the Middle East’s largest gas pipeline, which would carry gas from Iran’s South Pars gas field to Europe via Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon and beneath the Mediterranean Sea. Projected pipeline capacity is 110 million cubic meters of natural gas per day.

BASF and Gazprom agree on asset swap; BASF’s Wintershall expanding production of oil and gas, exiting gas trading and storage business

BASF and Russia’s Gazprom signed a legally binding basic agreement to swap assets of equivalent value. In October, Wintershall also substantially expanded its production and reserves of oil and gas in the North Sea through an asset swap with Statoil.
