Toyota’s next generation fuel cell electric technology is now powering a new set of Class 8 heavy-duty trucks. Designed to be flexible enough to meet the needs of a wide variety of OEM truck makers, the new fuel cell electric system in the latest prototypes has been adapted to a Kenworth T680 chassis. Port fleet rollout.
A zero-emission Kenworth Class 8 T680 day cab tractor equipped with a Ballard hydrogen fuel cell ( earlier post ) is on display at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The truck is part of the PACCAR Innovations booth exhibit—the first time PACCAR and Kenworth have exhibited at the show, which draws close to 200,000 visitors.
Capstone Turbine Corporation successfully completed track testing of a Kenworth Class 7 hybrid electric work truck using its 65kW microturbine as an on-board range extender. The Kenworth Class 7 work truck features a Capstone C65 microturbine that is installed onboard and operates on compressed natural gas. Earlier post.)
Toyota, Kenworth, the Port of Los Angeles and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) unveiled the first of Toyota and Kenworth’s jointly developed fuel cell electric heavy-duty trucks during a special event held at the Port of Los Angeles. —Bob Carter, Executive Vice President for Automotive Operations Toyota.
The Port of Los Angeles and its partners rolled out five new hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and introduced two hydrogen fueling stations. The Port’s technology development partners are Toyota Motor North America, which designed and built the powertrain’s fuel cell electricpower supply system; Kenworth Truck Co.,
Kenworth continues its advancements on low/zero emission projects focused on Kenworth T680 day cabs for drayage tractor operation in Southern California ports, which are backed by $9 million in government grants awarded last August. These two T680 tractors will be identical, with the exception of their power generation systems.
Coca-Cola Enterprises has ordered 150 Kenworth T370 diesel-electric tractors and 35 Kenworth T370 hybrid trucks, all of which will be on the road this year. The Kenworth T370 tractors (rated at 55,000 lb. The CCE order is the largest yet received by Kenworth for hybrid tractors and trucks.
Kenworth has been awarded three government grants totaling $8.6 million that will support low emissions projects involving Kenworth T680 Day Cabs targeted for use as drayage tractors in Southern California ports. These trucks are expected to be identical, except for their power generation systems.

FedEx Freight has begun beta testing two new Kenworth T660 tractors powered by Cummins Westport ISX12 G liquefied natural gas (LNG)-only engines. Other efforts include: Experimenting with emission-free hydrogen fuel cell-powered and electric forklifts for dock operations. Earlier post.)
UPS has purchased another 48 heavy tractor trucks equipped to run on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Manufactured by Kenworth, the LNG tractors are powered by Westport HD Systems and initially will pull trailers on a transit lane linking Ontario, Calif., and Las Vegas, Nev., along with UPS’s 11 existing LNG tractors.
Once the baseline truck and engine was determined (Volvo D13 (2010 emissions), Kenworth T600, 10-speed manual transmission), two simulation models were used to allow the evaluation of various packages: GT-POWER for engine cycle simulation and RAPTOR to model the vehicle, including the transmission and driveline.
Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation will begin offering retrofit versions of its Hydraulic Launch Assist (HLA) hybrid power system ( earlier post ) for refuse trucks later this year. The fluid compresses nitrogen gas in the accumulator and pressurizes the system. The HLA system. Click to enlarge. Launch Assist.
The projects range from electric locomotives, trucks and refrigeration trailers at railyards in Stockton and San Bernardino, to a hybrid tugboat and electric cranes and forklifts at the Port of Long Beach. million to deploy four fuel cell hybrid electric delivery vans for UPS for a minimum 12-month demonstration project in Chino.
More and more, especially the smaller “last mile” trucks, are powered by electricity. FedEx, Amazon and others are making the switch to electricpower, as are school buses and garbage trucks. Post Office will be converting a sizeable portion of its fleet of electric vans. Even the U.S.
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) says the maiden voyage of their Class 8 heavy-duty electric semi marks the first time an electric semi has crossed the border hauling a standard load, marking an important milestone as the two nations move toward a net zero future. The Peterbilt 579EV trucks have an 82,000 lb.
Nikola continues to be running to leave the bags of its former CEO Trevor Milton, who used to be convicted of securities fraud upcoming unveiling what became out to be a faux hydrogen-powered truck. In 2024, he mentioned, Nikola could have “full capacity for both” battery-electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
The First Plug-in Battery Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Goes on Sale This week Honda announced pricing for the CR-V e:FCEV, which is scheduled to go on sale in California (only) next month. In a first-ever technology pairing, Honda has mated plug-in battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric in the all-new 2025 CR-V e:FCEV.
Nikola, producer of fuel cell and battery electric semi trucks, held a grand opening for the first of its HYLA refueling stations. But it only took a few months for Nikola to set this up, which is key given the rapid rollout of electric trucks in California, especially for drayage (moving goods from port to distribution centers).
The Feds Are Leading the Charge for Hydrogen-Powered Trucks Fuel cell technology promises to be the most feasible solution to make long-distance truck driving more sustainable. Yet, despite the endless calls for decarbonization, hydrogen-poweredelectric trucks are hardly visible on American roads.
Hydrogen could displace some fossil-fuel use, but its production can generate carbon emissions as well, including in the form of “grid emissions” from electricity used to power that production, the lawmakers noted in their letter. Kenworth-Toyota hydrogen fuel-cell semi prototype.
