In August, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in Ovadan-Depe near the capital of Ashgabad in Turkmenistan to launch the construction of a major plant focused on the conversion of natural gas into synthetic gasoline. Unlike DME, methanol and ethanol, synthetic gasoline meets existing gasoline standards so it can be used as a drop-in fuel.
The plant will produce carbon-neutral fuel—enough to decarbonize more than 400,000 vehicles annually. The gasoline synthesis from methanol has been commercially proven in a 15000-bpd plant in Turkmenistan since 2019. Topsoe will deliver technology to HIF Global’s (HIF) planned eFuels facility in Texas. Earlier post.)
The TIGAS technology enables us to cut both the production cost and the lifecycle carbon footprint of everyday fuel by 50%. As a result, we will be able to profitably sell our environmentally superior fuel at competitive prices. Nacero selected TIGAS after careful consideration of competing technologies.
Super-emitters are facilities, equipment, and other infrastructure, typically in the fossil-fuel, waste, or agriculture sectors, that emit methane at high rates. The cube (left) shows methane plumes (purple, orange, yellow) over Turkmenistan. The instrument can also measure carbon dioxide.
The HOA follows the positive outcome of a joint pre-feasibility study undertaken by the three parties on the proposed project, based on Sasol’s proprietary technology, to produce high-quality transportation fuels from Uzbekistan’s gas reserves.
Oil remains the world’s leading fuel, but its 33.1% The averages hide a mixed picture by fuel, however. Oil demand grew by less than 1%—the slowest rate amongst fossil fuels—while gas grew by 2.2%, and coal was the only fossil fuel with above average annual consumption growth at 5.4% Source: BP.
