At the recent SAE 2009 World Congress in Detroit, General Motors engineers presented the first front-wheel-drive (FWD) iteration of their two-mode hybrid transaxle, termed the 2MT70 ( earlier post ), scheduled for its first application in the Saturn 2009 VUE 2-Mode Hybrid light sport-utility vehicle later this year ( earlier post ).

The first two vehicles available for AMP conversions are the GM Saturn Sky and the GM Pontiac Solstice. The torque and power density allows for improved fuel economy, increased range in all-electric drive mode and the potential for a smaller internal combustion engine in hybrid vehicles.

Saturn will remain in operation for the next several years, through the end of the planned lifecycle for all Saturn products. In the interim, if Saturn retailers or other investors present a plan that would allow a spin-off or sale of Saturn Distribution Corporation, GM would be open to any such possibility.

General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011. GM will announce final fuel economy estimates, as well as additional vehicle details such as name and pricing, later. V-6 flex-fuel engine.
