The increase in severe duty operations is due to changing driving habits on highway, including shorter haul lengths, the growth in intermodal delivery, and more stop-and-go operations, while off-highway has new energy efficient equipment that helps minimize fuel usage by cycling engines from load to no load.

The four trucks, based on the Peterbilt Model 320 Hybrid with Labrie body, will operate in daily curbside recycling duty and are expected to provide up to 30% improvements in fuel economy and emissions and significant reductions maintenance costs. Testing has shown a significant improvement in maintenance costs.

Charging nightly and driving under 29 miles will mean less need for hydrogen fuel, which is currently available at one of about 50 stations in California. Fuel economy is measured as MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). Peterbilt also worked with Toyota and offers its Model 579HFC for sale.

Hydrogen is used in many applications such as forklifts in warehouses, transit buses, as rocket fuel for the U.S This great benefit is important if there comes a time when planning a family vacation that takes you away from the hydrogen fueling station network. A maintenance-free car for about $21,000 sounds pretty enticing.
