The CEC updates its Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) sales figures quarterly by analyzing DMV data. Specifically, cumulative sales through the end of 2021 were: 663,014 BEV (62.9%). 379,125 PHEV (36% ). Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are polarising things. This, it appears, is of mighty appeal to Mazda Australia as it embarks on a potential plug-in onslaught, starting with its CX-60 PHEV in the first half of 2023. Mazda CX-60 PHEV, due here in the first half of 2023, put could be priced up to $80,000.

The Mazda6 is changing name, going electric and will be on-sale in China before the end of 2024. Revealed today at the Beijing auto show, the Mazda EZ-6 will be offered as both a battery electric vehicle and as a plug-in hybrid. The Mazda6 is currently offered for sale in Australia only with ICE powertrains. 2025 Mazda EZ-6.

In 1990, California adopted a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) requirement, mandating that the seven largest automotive companies in California “make available for sale” an increasing number of vehicles with zero tailpipe emissions. With these type of sales numbers, the effect is to propel Subaru and Mazda into the LVM tier.

Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Another top-selling EV beyond Tesla models that is not included is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV, which likely saw 2021 sales of between 20,000-25,000.
