The eGen Flex electric hybrid system includes a new drive unit, inverter and rechargeable energy storage system. The inverter is now water ethylene glycol (WEG) cooled, which eliminates oil lines, decreasing installation complexity, reducing maintenance expense, and increasing uptime.

When the batteries reach a predetermined state of discharge, the Capstone C30 microturbine fires up and recharges the batteries on the fly to extend the driving range up to 500 miles. No oil or other lubricants are needed, so maintenance is extremely low and the need to dispose of hazardous materials is eliminated.

As such, the theory regarding fleet manager EV adoption should be updated now that the automobiles are available for sale and revealed consumer behavior (empirical data) can be analyzed. EVs face barriers to adoption because they are a radical environmental technology.

The high voltage systems pose little to no risk of electric shock, either while driving or recharging. The nickel-metal hydride used in EV batteries is in maintenance-free sealed cells, so nothing gets in or out. There isn’t an electric car for sale in New Zealand today that has scored less than a total five-star ANCAP rating.

The extra lead-acid battery pack can be recharged externally at night from the Prius owner’s household 110 VAC source in a home garage. By not employing the gasoline engine to recharge the lead-acid pack, the “electric-only” range of the Nickel-Metal Hydride battery pack is extended from one mile to about 10 miles.
