The pilot project, which will form part of Volkswagen’s operations in Rwanda, was officially announced today by Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Group South Africa and responsible for the Sub-Sahara Africa Region, in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Rwanda, Right Honourable Dr. Edouard Ngirente.
The new fast-charging hub can power up entire fleets of vehicles in minutes, setting the stage for cross-border, all-electric commercial transportation. Rwanda was one of the first countries on the African continent to introduce very progressive policies for electric vehicles.
The Volkswagen brand has founded “Volkswagen Mobility Solutions Rwanda”, a company based in Rwanda. Going forward, the brand will be focusing in particular on new app-based mobility services such as car sharing and ride hailing in Rwanda. Overall, Volkswagen and its partner companies will create up to 1,000 jobs in Rwanda.
Spiro has the largest fleet of electric motorcycles on the roads in Africa. Spiro now has over 13,000 electric motorbikes and 40,000 swappable batteries in operation across Benin, Togo, Rwanda, and Kenya. Spiro says, to date, riders have collectively driven almost quarter of a billion kilometers.
Africa hosts an estimated 27 million motorbikes (motos), out of which 80% is estimated to be used for commercial taxi service. All these motos have the potential to soon be riding on electricity! The motorcycle sector has been getting attention when it comes to electrification due to the large addressable market.
Spiro, a leading electric motorbike manufacturer and clean energy provider in Africa, has so far deployed over 9200 electric motorbikes across Benin, Togo, and Rwanda.
The $163 million multi-year deal creates a new franchise venture called OX East Africa, and includes delivery of a fleet of OX Delivers electric trucks, along with a multi-year subscription to the companys tech platform and vehicle maintenance services as the company enhances its presence in Rwanda and expands into Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
The company, which currently operates in Rwanda and Kenya, is making significant strides in the African electric vehicle industry. Since its inception in 2016, Ampersand has built the largest electric motorcycle fleet in East Africa.

All governments should also support the transition of these light vehicles to zero emission vehicles; Kenya; Secretariat of Economy, Mexico; Morocco; Paraguay; Rwanda; Turkey; Uruguay. Unilever; Vattenfall; Zenith; Zurich.
Countries like Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Egypt all have plans in place to increase EV production and usage. Needless to say, EV sales are increasing globally. Many countries in Southeast Asia like Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand are taking steps to promote sales of EVs.
