Alternative fuel technologies have been embraced in Seattle, after the city was awarded a $1.4million grant from the US Department of Energy to enhance its fleet of green vehicles. Seattle also signed an agreement to be one of the first markets to introduce the Nissan LEAF back in April.

The commissioner bought the vehicle after hosting a Buy American, Go Green event on June 30 with the Ford Motor Company in an effort to encourage Americans to look at home-grown car manufacturers and their green vehicles.

Cell phone and digital service provider AT&T has backed up its commitment to green vehicles by deploying the 4,000th alternative fuel vehicle in its US corporate fleet. The vehicles are part of a 10year strategy to invest up to $565million in replacing around 15,000 fleet vehicles before 2018.

Many local governments around the world have set some ambitious targets for the introduction of green cars, but few compare to the government of Ontario, which wants one out of every 20 vehicles to have electric drive by the year 2020. The government is also likely to provide Green Vehicle License Plates for plug-in vehicles.
