The testing is being performed under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the US Coast Guard, Honda, and Mercury and will focus on two of the Coast Guard’s platform boats: 38-foot Special Purpose Craft - Training Boat and the 25-foot Response Boat - Small.

With additional fleet turnover, EPA expects these reductions to grow to 80% by the year 2030. Other results include: a 66% reduction in benzene; a nearly 60% reduction in mercury from man-made sources such as coal-fired power plants; an 84% decrease of lead in outdoor air; the removal of an estimated 1.5 Education and outreach.

Although diesel is the dominant fuel for cutters and many boats, the Coast Guard operates hundreds of gasoline-powered outboard engine boats. Conversion to a single-fuel fleet could improve operational performance, efficiency and resiliency.

Average monthly price of gasoline (all grades) is in green. During December 2008, which marked the nadir of the current price swing in gasoline with an average $1.687 per gallon (all grades), the new vehicle passenger car share had dropped to 47.3%. Retail sales were down 36% compared with a year ago and fleet sales were down 50%.

UCS advocates relentlessly for cleaner gasoline vehicles and dismisses plug-ins of all sorts, the Sierra Club strikes deals with Ford to promote a few thousand gasoline-dependent hybrids in exchange for advertising dollars, and the NRDC jumped on the biofuels bandwagon just as the cost of corn ethanol became impossible to ignore.
