Greater Washington DC will be an initial launch market for the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range. Chevrolet will deliver more than 100 Volts to several utilities across the US—including Pepco and Dominion, which serve Washington DC and its suburbs—as part of an extended demonstration program.

The arrangement will be announced at the New York Auto Show, where the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range will be on display. Chevrolet has previously announced that Volt sales will start simultaneously in California, Michigan and Washington DC, with other markets to follow.

Chevrolet plans to produce 10,000 Volt extended range electric vehicles by the end of the 2011 calendar year, and an additional 30,000 Volts during the 2012 calendar year, according to Volt Marketing Director Tony DiSalle, who made the announcements during a live video webcast 1 July. More than 80,000 people in New York, Washington, DC, and Greater Los Angeles, volunteered to drive the vehicles as part of Project Driveway, which began in November 2007. Regenerative braking extends the driving range. Drivers refill at hydrogen stations in New York, Washington, and Southern California.

In the US, GM has found that Chevrolet Volt demonstration units are a popular showroom draw for dealers as they let consumers look, touch and drive the electric car with extended-range capabilities. GM says that this is part of its plan to gain exposure for the vehicle and the Chevrolet brand.
