The vehicle, based upon a Chevy Silverado 3500 Class 3 commercial fleet truck, is the only Class 3 commercial work truck that has 30-40 miles (48-64 km) of all-electric range, EDI says. EDI has developed a range of medium- and heavy-duty PHEVs that offer significant emissions reductions with no corresponding loss in vehicle performance.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. However, because of the duty cycle used by the Postal Service, which generally amounts to only about 18-20 miles per day on a fixed route, these vehicles are being built without the range extender seen on the concept. The extended-range version will be focused on retail customers. Looks sharp.

It eliminates waiting in lines or out of order machinery and gives you the benefit of your vehicles full range right from your doorstep. Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse.
