GM is using ultrasonic welding in the 16.5 kWh battery pack in the new Cadillac ELR extended-range electric luxury coupe that goes on sale in North America in early 2014 ( earlier post ). GM first applied the process on the Chevrolet Volt and further refined it for ELR. The vehicle can be completely recharged in about 4.5

During the serial media launch events for the Chevrolet Volt, GM provided more detail (subsequent to the completion of related patent work) on the novel drive architecture applied in their first extended range electric vehicle to enhance the efficiency of both the battery electric and extended-range driving modes.

The Malibu ECO features GM’s eAssist light electrification technology ( earlier post ), which is engineered to deliver an estimated 26 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway. The eAssist system captures up to 15kW of energy that would be normally lost during braking and uses it to recharge the lithium-ion battery.

GM has been saying for a while now that they had picked their supplier for the LiIon battery in the Volt, but they weren’t prepared to announce who it was. Chances are, GM will start with CP (hey, those are Chris Paine’s initials!), GM Reported Ready To Give Volt Battery Nod to Unit of LG Chem. that got the nod.
