New research by scientists at King’s College London suggests that air pollution from London’s roads is improving overall but more work may be needed to tackle some sources of traffic pollution, which continue to breach limits in many parts of the city. No data was available to compare trends in ΔPM 2.5 between the two periods.

In a study on the effect of exhaust particles from aircraft turbine engines on human lung cells, Swiss researchers have found that cells reacted most strongly to particles emitted during ground idling. The study also showed that the cytotoxic effect is only to some extent comparable to that of particles from gasoline and diesel engines.

One segment of the on-road fleet that is believed to drive more miles and consume more fuel than the average fleet vehicle is livery (for-hire) vehicles, such as taxis and limousines. They used remote vehicle exhaust sensors to collect emissions measurements, and recorded a video image of the license plate of each vehicle.
