IAV has developed a particularly closed-coupled diesel exhaust gas aftertreatment (EAT) system. Under the EU6 standard, diesel engines are still allowed to emit up to 80 mg NO x /km milligrams of nitrogen oxides per kilometer—not only under the legal framework in the cycle but also in respect of increasingly tighter RDE requirements.

In 1975, General Ernesto Geisel, then-president of Brazil, ordered the country’s gasoline supply mixed with 10% ethanol. The level was raised to 25% over the next five years, which was intended to maintain a constant Brazilian gasoline supply for an ever-increasing demand. These were arguably the first flex-fuel vehicles.

But even today, vehicles equipped with Bosch diesel technology can achieve as little as 13 milligrams of NO x in standard legally-compliant RDE cycles. A dynamic driving style demands an equally dynamic recirculation of exhaust gases. To ensure optimum NO x conversion, the exhaust gases must be hotter than 200 degrees Celsius.

Two systems integrated in the MQB strategy which play a key role here are the modular gasoline engine system (MOB) with the new EA211 engine series (40 kW / 54 hp to 110 kW / 148 hp). EA211 series gasoline engines. The advantage is that the exhaust line, driveshafts and gearbox mounting position can be standardized.

The BMW XM is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system comprising a V8 gasoline engine and electric motor that delivers combined fuel consumption of 1.6 – 1.5 l/100 km [147 – 157 mpg US] in the WLTP cycle; combined electric power consumption of 30.1 – 28.9 The BMW XM LABEL RED will be added to the model range in autumn 2023.

This new undertaking will capture detailed information on pollutants from vehicle exhaust using remote-sensing equipment and portable emissions monitoring systems. Other labeling schemes, such as the Crit’Air program, certify vehicles’ environmental class based on pollutant emissions, and may distinguish diesel from gasoline powertrains.
