Hochgraf found that in 2010, the top 10 most efficient powertrains on the city cycle all had CVTs and were hybrids. Three of the top te most efficient powertrains in the highway cycle did not use CVTs or hybrid powertrains. PABE is affected by hybridization, by engine efficiency, by accessory loads (e.g., Hochgraf 2011.

Combined reported US hybrid sales (from Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM and Nissan) in April totalled 21,735 units, a 45.5% Reported hybrid new vehicle share in April 2008 was 3.2%—the GM delivered a total of 1,534 hybrid vehicles in the month. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 129,898, down 31% compared with April 2008.

Hybrid car sales may have slumped as the recession continues to take its toll on the car industry, but Ford has made itself the exception that proves the rule. The remarkable rise comes in sharp contrast to the overall picture across the automotive industry, with hybrid sales in the US having fallen by 14 per cent during the same period.
