Consumers who purchase an electric vehicle will find that lifetime costs to own the vehicle are competitive with conventional and hybrid vehicles, according to an analysis conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Changes in the price of gasoline will affect this balance and will cause significant changes in payback time.
Source: EPRI. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has released a broad assessment of the costs and benefits to modernize the US electricity system and deploy the smart grid. The analysis updates EPRI’s 2004 EPRI assessment, which estimated the cost of implementing a smart grid at $165 billion. Source: EPRI.
Source: EPRI/SCE. The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Southern California Edison (SCE) designed and implemented a survey to characterize consumers’ perceptions of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and their expectations of their electric utility as a supplier of transportation energy and associated services.
For the others, it is partnering with organizations like the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to focus on electric power generation, delivery and use, and working with communities, such as San Francisco, to ensure the development of integrated policies that will streamline adoption for consumers. The third phase of a SDG&E multi-year in-use study on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles showed that plug-in hybrids offer significant improvements in gas mileage and reductions in emissions when compared with standard hybrid-electric and gasoline internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Earlier post.)
The research by scientists at Rice University; the University of California, Berkeley; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL); and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) was published in the journal Nature Materials. The chemical industry uses zeolites to refine gasoline and to make laundry detergent and many other products.
Odyne, in conjunction with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the South Coast Air Quality Management District of California, has been selected to participate in a $45 million dollar DOE grant. The Lithium-ion batteries for these trucks will be made at Johnson Controls’ advanced manufacturing facility in Holland, Mich.
Fuels or energy carriers in the study included gasoline, ethanol, diesel, CNG, LPG, hydrogen, and electricity. Broadly, the team found that gasoline ICEVs using current technology have C2G emissions of ?450 Credit: ACS, Elgowainy et al. Click to enlarge.
The vehicles cost more to buy when modified for CNG use, but the fuel costs significantly less than diesel or gasoline at 25% less per equivalent gallon, said Bill Flemming, PECO’s fleet manager and chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Clean Cities Coalition.
Total annual gasoline savings of $12 billion/year translates to an 8.6-year Craft regulatory policies that articulate societal (including non-energy) benefits of EV adoption, such as the Total Value Test framework that Brattle co-developed with EPRI. year societal payback period for the investment.
The basic question addressed, which appears on the study homepage (epri-reports.org) is this: How would air quality and greenhouse gas emissions be affected if significant numbers of Americans drove cars that were fueled by the power grid? I truly hope we have turned a corner. billion metric tons.
T he Fall edition of the EPRI Journal has a feature story called The Plug In Hybrid Vehicle: Beyond Gasoline by Lucy Sanna Here is the PDF. The Plug-In hybrid charges directly from the electricity grid, but unlike its electric vehicle brethren, it sports a liquid fuel tank for unlimted driving range.
Take care of that 20% with a small, efficient gasoline engine that runs at its optimum speed. The reduction in emissions results from electric operation being much more efficient than gasoline operation. The reduction in emissions results from electric operation being much more efficient than gasoline operation. 2) The U.S.
. … Given the current barriers to increasing ethanol-based biofuels (blend wall, slow growth in cellulosic biofuel production, regulatory uncertainty surrounding the RFS), transportation electrification seemingly offers a more immediate opportunity to displace gasoline. They based their low electrification scenario (0.3%
This process will repurpose carbon dioxide for use as a liquid fuel that can be readily used as a high octane gasoline substitute. The team anticipates at least a twofold productivity improvement over current levels and a cost that can be competitive with gasoline. Wildcat Technologies, EPRI). Ohio State Univ.
The EPRI-NRDC Plug-in Hybrid Study makes clear that under every scenario studied, every region will yield reductions in greenhouse gases as we increase the number of plug-in cars. As a replacement for gasoline, there is probably no worse choice than coal-generated liquid fuel. That includes the worst, most coal dependent areas.
Water Supply, Researcher Says By Jennifer Bogo Popular Mechanics March 7, 2008 "A 30-mile commute in a gasoline-powered car would require the withdrawal of 18.9 All told, electric miles necessitate threefold the water consumption and 17 times the water withdrawal of gasoline miles. And what about the water used to refine gasoline?
Such a vehicle could reduce gasoline consumption for the average American by 50 percent to 70 percent and reduce automobile emissions well in excess of emissions that might result from the additional use of power plants. According to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), half the cars in the U.S.
The electric sofas and scooters were so much cooler - and quieter - than the gasoline powered stinkers that predominate. If drivers have to pay for fuel, this may become Project Permanently Parked in the Driveway, as the price of H2 is about four times that of gasoline.
Little would have been gained by attempting to expand the reach of gasoline to laptops or refrigerators, so we've long been subjected to a decades-long preemptive assault on electric cars. It takes a sustained effort to sow confusion about the obvious benefits of electric cars.
Heres our three-paragaph summary and a link to the first of several postings on the subject at CalCars-News : July 2007 EPRI-NRDC Definitive Study: PHEVs Will Reduce Emissions If Broadly Adopted The EPRI-NRDC studies finally give an environmental stamp of approval to PHEVs. Using the average U.S. PHEVs are meant to plug-in at night.
ITN Energy Systems Inc, in partnership with MAG Industrial Automation, EPRI, and the Colorado School of Mines, will develop solid-state electrochromic (EC) film on plastic substrates in order to reduce EC window cost in support of net-zero energy buildings. DOE grant: $4,992,651). DOE grant: $1,000,000). NanOasis Technologies, Inc.
Even less efficient EVs can save owners money compared to gasoline cars, though. miles per kwh, the ACEEE estimates annual charging costs at $960 , compared to about $2,000 for fueling a car with gasoline. 2024 Tesla Model Y. – Courtesy of Tesla, Inc. But increasing efficiency to 3.5
Despite this, a 2003 EPRI study , assuming only $2/gallon gas , zero buying incentives, and a PHEV premium of $3-$5,000 more than standard hybrids, shows that the total lifetime cost of ownership for a PHEV will be lower than that of any other vehicle type -- so the payback will be there. The EPRI says lithium-ion batteries are ready now.
in a year First NEVI charging stations up and running Gasoline sales have passed their peak It’s been a busy year here on the policy team. We conducted our third annual EV Driver Survey and, through a partnership with EPRI, started conducting quarterly surveys and mini-surveys to dive deeper into specific topics.
