The EPA gives this all-electric car ratings of 96 MPGe city/88 highway/92 combined (where MPGe is Miles per Gallon equivalent that measures how far the car will travel on the electric energy equivalent of a gallon of gasoline/33.7 kilowatt-hours).

That’s not surprising—the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the company’s only previous plug-in hybrid, is a well-executed PHEV with an EPA-rated 32 miles of usable electric range that retains all the virtues of the Pacifica minivan. The EPA rates the 4xe at 22 miles of electric range and an unimpressive 20 mpg operating as a hybrid.

The idea is to give our customers choice. We are the highest fuel economy of any hybrid, of any gasoline car without a plug sold in the US.

A free car on a four-year plan in France is another idea mentioned by Shai Agassi, CEO of Project Better Place. Annual use of an EV should be less than the average cost of $8,000 per year for using a gasoline in many countries including the USA. Project Better Place plans to deploy a massive network of battery charging spots.

For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. If I’d have to plan on stopping somewhere for an hour in the middle of a 3 hour drive, just to refuel, I’d feel pretty compelled to stick with a gasoline/diesel vehicle. The Roadster can go 244 miles EPA.

In a first drive of Mercedes’ electric G-wagen , we found it to be a better, more precise off-roader than the gasoline model—outshining the combustion versions even before the EV’s party-trick zenith called G-Turn.
