First unveiled on Tundra, this exceptional hybrid produces 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. The powertrain features a motor generator within the bell housing between the twin-turbo engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission. All 2023 Sequoias will feature the powerful twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain. Earlier post.).
This is what Toyota has done with the all-new 2022 Tundra, which we previewed in a Texas-based drive program last week. With choices of gasoline or a gasoline-electric (hybrid) engine, rear-wheel (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), the 2022 Tundra gives buyers multiple options of power and fueleconomy. 348 hp/405 lb.-ft.
All 2010 Chevrolet and GMC V-8 powered trucks now feature variable valve timing (VVT), a technology that enables continuous control of valve opening and closing that result in better engine breathing, fewer emissions and improved fueleconomy. When working with Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) on the 5.3L
The Corolla Cross, launched in 2021 with a gasoline engine, will be joined in 2023 by the compact crossover Corolla Cross Hybrid, one more gasoline-electric hybrid offering from Toyota. Clean Fleet Report has tested many Toyota hybrid models and know this fueleconomy number can easily be topped, getting in the 40+ mpg range.
We will do a full Road Test in the coming months, reviewing the Sequoia in detail, including real world fueleconomy. Fueleconomy numbers have not been announced, but the same gasoline-hybrid power plant in the Toyota Tundra pickup gets 20 mpg city/24 highway/22 combined. An engine now augmented by electric drive.
.& It only stands to reason that the largest vehicles in a lineup, those vehicles for which fueleconomy has never been the sole focus, should be among the last to see battery power. While the full-sized Tundra offers the choice between a standard turbo V-6 and hybridization, this 2023 Toyota Sequoia is hybrid only. .&
One engine for all the trim levels i-Force gasoline – with RWD and an automatic limited-slip differential SR5, TRD Sport, Limited 2.4-Liter In the case of the 2025 4Runner, as shown above, the difference between the two engines is not great. The Tundra can tow 9,500 pounds, and the Sequoia that can tow 12,000 pounds.
The Sequoia’s styling follows the blocky look of Toyota’s full-size Tundra truck. The look works better on the outside than it does on the Tundra – and better on the Sequoia’s outside than its inside. Creature comfort isn’t the issue here – the Sequoia is roomy and quiet, save for muted engine roar from the 3.5-liter
In terms of fueleconomy, the Nissan offers a claimed 18 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway on the rear-drive models. We’d argue that the real story is how little downsizing powertrains has done for the segment’s fueleconomy. This is because Toyota’s turbocharged engine makes peak torque sooner than Nissan’s V6.
V6 engine, good enough to make 457 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. The fueleconomy gulf between the two is estimated to be a whopping 1 mpg, proving once again that Toyota hybrid systems at least in trucks are tuned for power instead of mileage. Differences? But I digress; this post is about Lexus.
Lexus expands the LX lineup for 2025 with a hybrid The hybrid system is unlikely to make a meaningful impact on fueleconomy The Lexus LX 700h hybrid arrives at the beginning of 2025 Lexus has offered hybrid powertrains in its LS flagship sedan and LC flagship coupe for some time, and now it’s adding one to those models’ SUV counterpart.

What will power the next generation 4Runner, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Tundra, and Supra? Stay tuned!
On Monday, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis and an engineering team provided powertrain, scenario, and spec details surrounding the 2026 Ram Ramcharger plug-in hybrid pickup truck. The Toyota Tundra or Ford F-150 Hybrid are primarily parallel hybrids without a plug. The gas engine runs on 87 octane and feeds off a 27-gallon fuel tank.
